Cristiano Ronaldo has insisted there is no reason to panic despite Real Madrid slumping to a shock 4-0 defeat to Atlético on Saturday night.
Ronaldo was captured on video performing karaoke as he celebrated his 30th birthday at a Madrid nightclub, hours after Carlo Ancelotti’s side were overwhelmed by their city rivals at the Vicente Calderón stadium. Despite the humiliating defeat, the Portuguese forward was in upbeat mood, telling reporters the result was little more than a blip on the way to the La Liga title. “Real Madrid are better than Atlético but we have to prove it on the field,” he said. “Anyway, I think we will win the title at the end of the season. Nothing worked today. It is a day to forget. Real Madrid can never lose 4-0 against any team. The team is fine, but today we made a big mistake. These were three points that we lost. No more. Not four points.
“We lacked enthusiasm and we were not mentally or physically fresh. There was little recovery time from Wednesday’s game [against Sevilla].”
Tiago, Saúl Ñiguez, Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic scored the goals on a night when everything went right for Diego Simeone’s side. The La Liga champions are now only four points behind Real and are unbeaten in six derbies this season, winning four of them. Ancelotti said after the game that one of his players had played well, and called it his worst defeat during his time in charge. And Ronaldo himself turned on a reporter who asked him to explain why he had motioned to the Club World Cup-winning badge on his shirt after his dismissal against Cordoba on 24 January.
“Do you want to talk about what happened today or about Cordoba, that was three months [sic] ago now,” said Ronaldo. “What do you want me to say? If you were an intelligent journalist you’d ask me questions about today’s game. You are not intelligent. Sorry.”
Real Madrid play Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday before they visit Schalke in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie a week on Wednesday.
